How Do I Know if I Have Prediabetes?

Get checked by your doctor

The only way to truly know if you have prediabetes is to be tested by your doctor. There are a few different risk factors and blood tests your doctor may use to diagnose prediabetes.

Blood test results that indicate prediabetes

  • A1C of 5.7% – 6.4%
  • Fasting blood glucose of 100 – 125 mg/dl
  • 2-h blood glucose of 140 mg/dl – 199 mg/dl

People with prediabetes often don’t have symptoms.

In fact, millions of people have prediabetes and don’t know it because symptoms develop so gradually, people often don’t recognize them. Some people have no symptoms at all. Prediabetes symptoms are similar to those of diabetes can include:

  • increased thirst
  • frequent urination
  • blurred vision
  • fatigue
  • frequent infections
  • cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
  • tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
  • recurring skin, gum or bladder infections

Rely more on risk factors

It is generally recommended that if you are overweight and age 45 or older, you should be checked for prediabetes. For those over 45 and not overweight you can consult with your doctor on your next visit whether or not you should be tested. For adults younger than 45 and overweight, your doctor may recommend testing if you have any other risk factors for prediabetes, including:

  • high blood pressure
  • low HDL cholesterol and high triglycerides or high LDL cholesterol
  • a family history of diabetes
  • a history of gestational diabetes
  • inactive lifestyle
  • polycystic ovary syndrome
  • acanthosis nigricans- a darkened discoloration around the folds and creases of the skin
  • belonging to an ethnic group at high risk for diabetes
    • African-American
    • Hispanic
    • American Indian
    • Asian-American
    • Pacific Islander
